I wanted to make funny and positive illustrations that show family love. I tried to keep them gender-neutral so that everyone could relate to the characters.
Once my sketches were done, I opened Affinity Designer, my vector graphics editor of choice, and did my first illustration. When I do a new illustration, I sometimes make a few adjustments to my sketches and try different things from what I had planned based on the inspiration of the moment: I put the little baby in a little blanket; I removed the grass and tried to put little feet; I placed the baby in a more natural position in the parent’s arms.
My color scheme was decided using the color swatches from the Printful printing service, since I thought I would use it to print my t-shirts, but unfortunately, although the print looks very nice, I found that the t-shirts were too expensive to produce if I want to sell them on Etsy as print-on-demand.
After that, taking inspiration from the style and color of my other illustrations, I made the following ones. The one with the whole family was actually added following a comment from a friend who said it would be fun to have one with both parents. I tried again to keep them gender-neutral so that more family types could relate to the characters. I didn’t keep the style of the mushrooms from the second illustration, because even though I was inspired by a real kind of mushroom, they actually look like male organs… 🧐
Here are all the final variations that I chose to keep:
Finally, after printing the first design on a t-shirt, I didn’t like the shadow effect, so I removed it from the final version. I really enjoyed doing this personal project.
